About Principal Brownell

Berlin CSD welcomed Kimberly Brownell, who was appointed Principal of Berlin Middle-High School at a Board of Education meeting on June 22, 2021.

Brownell, originally from PA, comes to Berlin from Hoosick Falls CSD, where she taught English for seven years. She began her career in this area by teaching English, grades 9-12, in a residential placement school in Bennington, VT, and subsequently moved on to Brighter Choice Charter Middle School for Girls, Albany, NY, where she taught 7th grade.

In 2008, Brownell began teaching grades 7 and 8 in Harrisburg City School District, PA. Prior to this, she worked in a nonprofit organization and began tutoring in an afterschool program in the city of Harrisburg, PA. “It is there that I discovered my passion for helping young people reach their fullest potential in school,” she noted.

In 2012, Brownell earned a master’s degree in Reading K-12 from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania; she is also certified in Professional Literacy Grades 5-12 in New York State. She holds a BA in Communications with an emphasis in public relations and advertising from Messiah College, PA. Earlier in her career, she worked as a concierge at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center, PA, “This gave me a more flexible schedule so I could earn my certification as an English teacher in grades 7-12,” she said.

Brownell lives with her husband and young children on a grass-fed beef cattle farm in West Hoosick, NY. She is an active member of her church and says she and her family enjoy working on various home and farm projects, as well as “hiking, biking, swimming, traveling, reading and playing games.”

Berlin Superintendent A. Joseph Dhara said of the appointment, “Mrs. Brownell brings a lot of passion and dedication with her to Berlin. We are excited to have her join us as a part of our team.”
