Interim Superintendent Dr. Maureen Long
mlong@berlincentral.org
Superintendent of Schools
Berlin Central School District
At the November 28 special board meeting, the Berlin CSD Board of Education appointed Dr. Maureen Long as Interim Superintendent, effective immediately.
Dr. Long comes to Berlin CSD from the Menands School District, where she retired at the end of last school year after serving the past ten years as Superintendent. Dr. Long has many accomplishments from her time at Menands, including the development of a strategic plan that was a collaborative effort, one which included faculty, staff, and community and feedback from students.
Berlin’s board is impressed by Dr. Long’s enthusiasm and experience and by her desire to dive right into the day-to-day of the district and meet its community.
Below is more about Dr. Long, in her own words.
What is your educational background?
I completed my undergraduate work at the College of St. Rose, with a major in mathematics and minor in business; I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics and secured a NYS Teaching Certificate in Mathematics 7–12.
My graduate work in Education, with a focus on special education, was conducted at Russell Sage College, culminating in a Masters of Science in Education and a NYS Teacher Certification in Special Education K–12.
I conducted my post graduate work in educational leadership at the Sage Colleges, where my dissertation was a study of sustainability in small rural schools, specifically in the Adirondack Park. I am honored to have been bestowed my Doctoral Degree in Education.
What is your background in teaching and administration?
I have had the opportunity to grow and learn as an educator in a variety of schools and districts throughout the Capital Region. I began my career as a middle school math teacher in Gloversville, and upon receipt of my masters degree I had the opportunity to be the first consultant special education teacher at Troy High School.
While at Troy I was given the opportunity to serve as chairperson for the Committee on Special Education at the district level, piquing my interest in, and pursuit of, administration.
While pursuing my administrative credentials I was employed in the Wynantskill Union Free School District, where I conducted my administrative internship and was given my first true opportunity to serve in an administrative capacity.
I was able to transition those experiences and what I had learned to district-level roles as Assistant Superintendent in Coxsackie–Athens and then Scotia–Glenville. I had the privilege of spending the last ten years as the Superintendent in Menands.
Tell us about your family?
My husband Bob and I have three grown children, the youngest graduating college this year. We have lived nearly our entire lives in Rensselaer County, and currently live just a few miles from where we both grew up.
What are your interests outside education?
I love spending time with family, both immediate and extended. I am an avid reader and a lover of music and musical theater; I greatly appreciate live performances of all kinds. During the summer months I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially on the south end of Schroon Lake.
Welcome Dr. Long!
