BES’ monthly Character Education assemblies are an opportunity for students and staff to come together and talk about the character traits that will help them succeed socially and emotionally in and outside of the classroom. In each assembly a new character trait for the month is introduced by the Character Ed Committee.

Courage, mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand fear, or difficulty, was the Character Education trait during the month of April.

The Character Education team shared a video with students during the assembly about what courage means and what it can look like.  Several BES staff members also shared their experiences with courage and times when they had to muster the trait to overcome adversity, some even sharing when they wished they had used more courage.

Thanks to the BES third graders in Ms. Rontey’s class for leading the assembly in the Mountaineer Mantra:

Mountaineers Mantra

The Mountaineers are WE!
RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, RESPECTFUL!
Berlin students all agree!
RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, RESPECTFUL!
We climb, we climb, we climb!
RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, RESPECTFUL!
We do it every time!
RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, RESPECTFUL!

The Mountaineers Mantra is recited at the start of each monthly Berlin Elementary School assembly. Being a Mountaineer means being responsible, safe and respectful.

Each month during the Character Education assembly the Character Counts and Merit awards are handed out.

A BES Mountaineer is responsible, safe and respectful. Merits are given out by BES staff and bus drivers to celebrate Mountaineers who demonstrate these traits. The recipients receive merits that are deposited in the Mountaineer Merit container in BES’s main hallway.

Each month, Principal Kent and Assistant Principal Cataldo draw from this container the names of ten merit recipients (five from kindergarten to second grade and five from third to fifth grade), who receive a prize and recognition at the assemblies.

Congratulations to April’s Mountaineer Merit Winners!

Willamina Woodcock, Leyla Saviano, Franchesca Milianta, Alyssa Jagrosse, Derrious McCoy, Dylan Manchester, Forrest Kennedy, Christopher Kelley and Sophia Sudkrathok

Monthly Character Counts award recipients are selected by classroom teachers and announced during the monthly assemblies.

During the April assembly, second grade teacher Mrs. DeMagistris received the Restorative Rock Star Award.

She is always there to nurture and guide her students academically, socially and emotionally. Mrs. D is a natural at helping students when they are faced with difficult challenges. She uses effective restorative circles to help her students problem solve and create a safe and inclusive classroom environment. She is also an incredibly supportive colleague that provides leadership and wisdom to several BES staff members. Thank you for all that you do, Mrs. D.
