Citizenship was the Character Education theme at Berlin Elementary during the month of February. BES Student Ambassadors were recognized during the February Character Education assembly for giving back to their school and local communities in the spirit of good citizenship. The students were recognized with Citizen Awards from Assistant Principal Jodi Cataldo during the assembly.

Special guest Berlin CSD Superintendent, Mr. Dhara, spoke with the BES Mountaineers at the assembly about what it is to be a good citizen. He asked the young Mountaineers to define what being a good citizen means to them and was excited to hear many wonderful answers that ranged from helping a friend solve a problem to showing kindness on the playground.

Mr. Dhara then shared what being a good citizen means to him and his family. He showed photos of the different types of volunteering he and his two sons have been doing over the past years, helping a neighbor rake leaves, volunteering at a food pantry and being part of his local Rotary, a community-service organization.

“To me being a good citizen means helping out people who need it, taking care of someone, listening, volunteering, following the rules and laws and doing your work,” said Mr. Dhara.

Each month during the Character Education assembly the Character Counts and Merit awards are handed out.

Being a BES Mountaineer means being responsible, safe and respectful. Merits are given out by BES staff and bus drivers to celebrate BES Mountaineers who demonstrate these traits. The recipients receive merits that are deposited in the Mountaineer Merit container in BES’s main hallway.

Each month, Principal Kent and Assistant Principal Cataldo draw from this container the names of ten merit recipients (five from kindergarten to second grade and five from third to fifth grade), who receive a prize and recognition at the assemblies.

Congratulations to February’s Mountaineer Merit Winners!

She encourages a growth mindset, looks for the positive, and practices gratitude every day. Thank you Mrs. Nichols for everything you do!”
