The third grade curriculum focuses on Communities Around the World. In the month of January, the third grade students at BES studied the country of China. This past Friday, the students attended different stations led by their teachers. One related to the characters of Chinese writing; another was making a Chinese lantern to signify the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration; and the last was experiencing the different types of food eaten during the celebration. Each food that was experienced had a significant meaning for the new year. For example, noodles represent a long life, dumplings mean wealth and prosperity, and oranges mean good luck and happiness. The third grade students wore red in honor of the Chinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year celebration and were excited to share all the new traditions they learned. -Mr. Bourquard, Ms. V. Healy, Ms. Peter-Hoen and Ms. Rontey
A special thanks to third grade teacher Ms. V. Healy, who shared some of her own traditions and memories from her childhood celebrations of the Lunar New Year.
