Retired BES teacher and beloved community member Mrs. Debbie Sweeney was the guest reader in Mrs. Olson’s 1st grade classroom.

This week is Read Across America Week, which runs from March 2nd – 6th. The week’s purpose is to celebrate reading, encourage reading and educate about its benefits. It also helps to kick off National Reading Month, which runs through the month of March.

On Friday March 1st, Mrs. Olson’s first grade class celebrated Read Across America week a day early.  The first graders launched into the BES K-2 March Madness Reading Tournament by inviting a special guest reader for a Sweet 16 Round read aloud face off.  Retired BES teacher and beloved community member Mrs. Debbie Sweeney was the guest reader for the morning! Mrs. Sweeney had the students on the edge of their seats as she read: The Giant Hug by Sandra Horning and Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! by Mo Willems.

After the read aloud students voted on the book they would like to see advance to the Elite 8! This was a great opportunity for Mrs. Olson to do a cross curricular lesson and apply the student’s vote to the current math unit of study which happened to be bar graphs!

Check out the results below.  It looks like the pigeon has a vote from Mrs. Olson’s class!

Stay tuned for more National Reading Month highlights and activities throughout the month of March!
