Fourth graders in Mrs. Kneer, Ms. Mulvey, Mrs. Laz and Mrs. Bersaw’s classrooms have been working with the social studies unit: Immigration and migration from the early 1800’s to the present. Fourth graders participated in a whole day of learning through stations on what immigration is, why people immigrated in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the voyage to America, experiences at Ellis Island, and what work, school, and home life was like for them specifically in New York. The following day the grade went to the New York State Museum where a museum guide taught an immigration lesson in conjunction with the exhibits at the museum. Students learned the process of citizenship and had a presentation shared by Berlin Central School District’s Superintendent Mr. Dhara on his own experience with becoming an American citizen. Students posed many questions that Mr. Dhara answered and came to have a better understanding about United States citizenship. – Mrs. Kneer and the Fourth Grade Team
