During April’s Character Education Assembly at Berlin Elementary, Principal Tracy Kent and the Character Education committee focused on the Earth in honor of Earth Day.

During the assembly students learned about the big impact they can have on the planet by doing small things in their community, such as recycling.

The Character Education committee also shared the read aloud below with the community on Earth Day.

April’s assembly also featured special guests from the Berlin High School! Seniors Matthew Hart, Sophie Ericson, and Bailey Catlin, along with their Marine Biology Independent study advisor, Berlin High School Science teacher Mr.  Matthew Christian.

The marine biology students and Mr. Christian made a presentation about the amazing sea creatures they work with just a few miles away in the Berlin High School Aquatics Lab. The marine biology students gave an excellent interactive presentation to the elementary students, including a slideshow found here: https://berlincentral.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/The-Marine-Bio-Lab.pdf .

The seniors also brought one of the Moon Jellyfish they raised from a polyp this school year to show the students during the assembly. It was exciting for the young Mountaineers who were full of excellent and thoughtful question for the senior Mountaineers.

The BES assemblies for this month concluded with Principal Kent announcing the monthly Mountaineer Merit awards and teacher-nominated Classroom Community Member awards.

Classroom Community Members are students nominated for showing good citizenship and being responsible, safe and respectful.

April’s Mountaineer Merits

Being a Mountaineer means being responsible, safe and respectful. Merits are given out throughout the month by BES staff and bus drivers to celebrate students who demonstrate these traits. These students are given merits that are deposited in the Mountaineer Merit container found in the main hallway.

At the assembly each month, Principal Kent draws ten merit recipients (five from kindergarten to second grade and five from third to fifth grade) who receive a prize.
