On March 14th, Berlin Middle High School’s Science Department hosted ten Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineering Ambassadors (EAs), to present four engineering breakthroughs and real-world challenges.

RPI’s EAs are students who participate in a work-study K-12th grade outreach program. The ambassadors set out to inspire students by visiting their school district’s and engaging them in the various engineering disciplines, using hands-on labs related to their fields of study.

This year the engineering students presented four different labs that reflected real-world challenges and possible solutions: Biomimicry and Engineering, Sea Level Rising, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles, and Oil Spills.

The RPI EAs worked in teams of two to present their lessons and guide the Mountaineers through hands-on labs. The EAs also saved time at the end of each of their sessions to field questions about college life and or their major. The RPI EAs this year were: Grace Mahoney, Nuclear Engineering; Dan Ducey, Mechanical Engineering; Mahmood Tipu, Biomedical Engineering; Charlotte Ruley, Mechanical Engineering; Nicholas Jankowski, Aerospace Engineering; Katie Titus, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering; Trent Burton, Mechanical Engineering; Christian Yamada, Mechanical Engineering.

The RPI Engineering Ambassador program has been visiting BMHS’ Science department for over ten years and each year has created unique presentations and labs tailored to each 6-12th grade science class.

Thank you to BMHS’ Science and Technology teachers, Mrs. Hayes, Mr. Scannell, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Wetmore, Mr. Christian, Mr. Toole and Mr. Mellor, for making this opportunity possible for our students each year.
