Last week, Ms. Meyer’s 7th grade ELA classes and Ms. Hammond’s Spanish 1A classes learned about Day of the Dead, which is on November 1st and 2nd. During ELA classes, students researched deceased poets, their favorite poems, and reflected on why they liked the poems. Each Spanish class chose one poet per period to create a Day of the Dead Altar. Teachers and staff voted on their favorite altar out of the three classes. Students were evaluated on the important aspects of Day of the Dead Altars: papel picado banners, marigolds, candles, favorite things the deceased enjoyed, photos of the deceased, and/or food and beverages. All classes showed amazing teamwork and creativity. The class who created an altar for Pablo Neruda was the winner. Students were rewarded with refreshments and snacks while watching “The Book of Life” in class. – Ms. Hammond and Ms. Meyer
