On January 8th, at the Berlin High School, Mr. Covell’s Siena Psychology students visited Mrs. Lamontagne’s AP Literature and Composition class. The psychology students presented information on American psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a model for understanding human motivation and behavior, and Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud’s concepts of id, ego, and superego.

Mrs. Lamontagne usually prepares a lesson on the writings of Maslow and Freud to help her students develop a deeper level of understanding of characters and their motivation in a story. However, this year the Psychology and AP Literature classes run during the same time block, leaving an opportunity to hold a cross-curricular collaboration.

After the peer-to-peer lesson and study, students in Mrs. Lamontagne’s class shared reflections on the experience. Find a few reflections below.

“I think it will help me better understand literary characters because it will help me decipher what a character is thinking.”

“I think this will help me view passages in literature from a different point of view and help me  develop my characters more in my writing.”

“The physical and social needs triangle might explain the underlying issues….”

 Great work, Mountaineers!
