Recently, Ms. DeCarciofolo’s 7th grade Social Studies classroom was transported back to the 1650s. Ms. DeCarciofolo created a week-long Colonial Simulation with the learning goal being to provide students a better understanding of the many difficult situations that colonists in the 13 Colonies may have faced.
The Mountaineers were given a charter to start their own colony in the New World! In doing this the students were able to experience the anger and frustrations that colonists had toward the King when ordered to give their resources and money to Great Britain. These reactions to the simulation helped to lead the students into the next unit on the American Revolution which includes the Boston Tea Party.
Ms. DeCarciofolo finds these types of activities to be a great way to engage Mountaineers in their history lessons.
