On April 29th, the Berlin Middle High School held its 7th Annual SMITH 5K/1 Mile Fun Run and Family Fun/Wellness Day. This community event is a special day not only for the way in which it brings our community together, but also for how it supports a wonderful local scholarship.
The SMITH Scholarship goes to a graduating senior who demonstrates the outstanding qualities of: Service-Merit-Integrity-Truth-Honor. These qualities were embodied by Berlin CSD graduate Bob Smith and the scholarship was founded in his honor.
BMHS sixth grade teacher Mrs. Ariel Gilbert, organizer of the scholarship run/walk, is excited to report that this year’s Berlin SMITH Scholarship 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run was a success.
“Thank you to the students, families, staff, and community members who came out on the rainy, chilly day to run and walk,” said Mrs. Gilbert.
“Together we raised over $2,700 for the SMITH scholarships!”
Mrs. Gilbert would like to thank all the volunteers and school community for making the event not only possible but a big success.
“A special thank you to the Middle School Student Council students and families who helped with setting up and running the 5K. It was a great way to unite as a community for a wonderful cause,” said Mrs. Gilbert.
The Family Fun/Wellness Day was also a great success according to organizer Mrs. Michele Corsey, BCSD School Nurse.
“Thank you to the vendors, class advisors and students who had tables at the Family Fun/Wellness Day,” said Mrs. Corsey.
Special shout-outs from Mrs. Corsey go to the BCSD PTO for sponsoring the Bounce House, BMHS Art teacher Ms. Shannon DeCelle and her art students for providing face painting, Ms. Jodi Lawliss-Corrado and team from Metta Physical Therapy for the aerobic dancing demonstration, Mr. Twisty for all the amazing balloon characters and smiles he provided and of course BMHS custodian Mr. Billy Saunders for all his time helping set up and break down the event.
“We couldn’t have done it without all of your support,” said Mrs. Corsey.
Thanks also goes to the Taconic Valley Soccer Club for holding their opening day at the middle high school in order to support the event!
BCSD looks forward to next year’s event and would like to say a big THANK YOU to the dynamic duo of Mrs. Gilbert and Mrs. Corsey who pulled together another wonderful community event.
