In light of the recent traumatic event that took place during a Buffalo Bills game to player Damar Hamlin, the Berlin CSD would like to remind families of the Dominic Murray Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act, a new law as of July 1, 2022. This notice is a follow up to the information the district shared at the beginning of the school year.

As a result of the new law the Berlin CSD purchased a new automated external defibrillators (AED) (medical devices designed to analyze the heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock to victims of ventricular fibrillation to restore the heart rhythm to normal) two of these AED devices will now be available to travel with coaches.
The letters attached below will be provided to parents prior to the start of each season to promote awareness.
To ensure the health and safety of our student athletes, and compliance with this new law, you will notice a new section on Family ID: Heart Health & Family Health History which includes cardiac screening questions.

The Dominic Murray Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act is a law that requires schools, students, and parents/guardians to have information on sudden cardiac arrest risks, signs, and symptoms. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can occur when there is a traumatic hit to one’s chest disrupting the electrical system in the heart. The use of an AED can help restore the electrical system in the heart. Please note that sudden cardiac arrest in children and youth is rare. The incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) on the playing field is 0.61 in 100,000.
