Berlin Middle High School’s Spanish teacher Ms. Day ended the middle school Mountaineers’ summer school program with some fun outdoor cooking of tostones. The students learned about the origin of the dish and helped to prepare it as their last day of summer school came to an end.

Tostones, a Spanish word for “to toast” are twice-fried plantain, a staple in many Latin American and Caribbean cuisine. The students really enjoyed making and tasting the tostones.

High school summer school also finished classes today and August regents will take place next week. Mr. Ellis, who has been the BMHS Summer School Principal in tandem with Ms. Gilbert, held a cookout for the high school students as a fun activity to celebrate their hard work.

BES’ summer school principal Ms. Hooks shared that the elementary summer program has some exciting activities ahead during their final week as well, which concludes on the 18th. We will make sure to share those highlights next week.

Photos highlights from summer school both at BMHS and BES can be found below. They include: Mr. Christian and Ms. Mahar working with middle school students to build, design and launch rockets; Ms. Kneer’s BES classroom set up as a campsite for a creative learning environment; Ms. V. Healy’s aquarium study; and Ms. Walsh engaging the BES students in STEM activities. These are just a few highlights from the summer of learning.

Congratulations summer school Mountaineers on all your hard work this summer and all the best to the high school students as they take their summer regents next week.

The dedication and creativity of the K-12 summer school teaching staff, administration, custodial and food service staff has been wonderful. They have helped in so many ways begin the recovery of the learning loss that was brought on during the pandemic. BCSD is very grateful for their commitment.

Let’s go Mountaineers!
