Over 300 boxes of mac & cheese and canned pasta were collected recently for the Berlin Community Food Closet (BCFC) Summer Lunch program. The pasta and more than 100 other items were collected by the BCSD Transportation staff (1st place), Berlin Elementary School staff (2nd place), followed by the staff of the Middle High School.
This is the second year that the BCSD transportation staff has won the contest! As a reward, BCFC volunteers will serve breakfast to the staff in early June. A big thank you to all who participated and especially to building reps Gretchen Ruebel, Lisa Purdy and Jeanette Alderman.
The summer lunch program, in its second year, provides lunch supplies to families each week for eight weeks. Lunch supplies include sandwich or other entrees, fruits, chips or crackers, lettuce, bread and produce of the season. Donations are ALWAYS welcome. Fresh produce is especially welcome. Other items needed include individual fruit cups, peanut butter, jelly, small jars of mayonnaise, canned chicken and tuna, mustard, relish and ketchup. Donations can be left at the church on the 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9-11, Sunday from 10 -11 at the church back door or in the lobby of the Taconic Mountain Insurance Company (anytime). Cash donations can be sent to BCFC, Box 225, Berlin NY 12022.
If you have children in the Berlin School District and would like an application, please call 518-658-2942 and leave your name and address. This is a pick up program this year, so it is open to all District Families. To volunteer to pack buckets on Saturday mornings, please call coordinator Dianne Mosher at 518-795-0509.
The Berlin Community Food Closet is an independent food pantry completely supported by the generous donations of families and businesses of the area and serves families in the Berlin and Petersburg areas. Food is distributed the first and third Saturdays each month from 9-11 am at the United Methodist Church, 17 South Main Street in Berlin or by appointment.
