students standing in front of drawingsThe walls outside the 5th-grade classrooms at Berlin Elementary are covered with heroes like Florence Nightingale, Jackie Robinson, Malala Yousafzai and Abraham Lincoln. These famous people have fought, or are still fighting for, human rights and freedom. The students’ illustrations and essays are part of Mrs. Brenda Demagistris’s Social Studies cross-curriculum work on human rights. The 5th graders chose a hero to research and then wrote an essay about the person. They also created a timeline of his or her life, made a slideshow presentation, and drew pictures to illustrate their hero in action.
