Dr. Cathie Allain retired from BCSD on June 30 -we send her best wishes for a restful retirement!
Cathie Allain, principal of the Berlin Middle-High School has spent most of her adult life as an educator, whether it be as a preschool teacher, elementary teacher, administrator or an adjunct professor. She has worked tirelessly throughout the years nurturing and guiding children and adults while taking college classes to further her own professional development. She not only was an educator, but along with her husband raised a young family while attending college to eventually earn her doctorate from Russell Sage College, the first graduating class of Russell Sage’s doctoral program. Cathie is and has been an inspiration to us all.
Cathie worked long hours as our principal, and was frequently one of the first people to arrive in the morning. She greeted students and staff with a bright smile and a cheery “good morning,” often asking, “How are you this morning?” Cathie instinctively knew when someone was having a difficult morning and was quick to check in to offer kind words and support to brighten one’s day.
It was vitally important to Cathie that the school environment was one of respect, where students felt welcome and cared, prepared to learn and grow to the best of their ability. She would often work with students who were struggling, either during the day or after school. Her dedication and compassion was greatly appreciated.
Cathie’s door was always open for students or staff to stop for a quick hello or for a longer conversation. Cathie has immense understanding and respect for others as she listens to the thoughts, ideas and varying perspectives of students and staff. That respect and understanding helped to guide Cathie with decision making. Cathie is a leader, a creative thinker, and one who is able to problem-solve even the most challenging of circumstances while maintaining genuine regard for all involved.
Cathie Allain is retiring. Let’s take a moment to process that statement. She will be greatly missed.
Cathie was often heard saying “I love my job. I love what I do. I love all of you.” It was evident that Cathie did indeed love her job. Even on the most difficult of days, she put her own feelings and needs aside to make certain the students and staff went home knowing she appreciated each and every person.
We thank you, Cathie, for all you have done for each of us. We thank you for being a positive role model. We thank you for listening to us, for laughing with us and for crying with us. We thank you for your compassion and for your kind words and actions.
Cathie, you have earned your retirement. Enjoy the next chapter of your life and your precious family. Congratulations and know that we all love you too.
