Last week, students at Berlin MS/HS learned about the Day of the Dead celebration. It is a tradition that spans more than a thousand years and was originally celebrated during the harvest season but once the Spanish arrived, they insisted that they celebrate in conjunction with the Roman Catholic All Saints and All Souls days. They learned that it is not a celebration of death but rather a celebration of the lives of those that have passed before us and that in no way is it considered scary or sad. It is a way for families to remember their loved ones and for the younger generations to learn about their ancestors.
Here are the ofrendas we created in our classrooms. Students brought in pictures of loved ones that have passed and some of their favorite items. Ms. Day also made Mexican Hot Chocolate and Pan de muertos. If you know a Berlin student that takes Spanish, ask them about it. See more photos.
