Members of the Berlin CSD staff have spent time this summer continuing their education, refining their skills, or discovering new tools or developments in education.
A continuing education opportunity took place at Berlin Elementary last week and continues this week for staff members who regularly engage in crisis prevention and management.
Berlin High School’s STARS classroom teacher and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) trainer, Ms. Annette Bell, provided TCI training to several staff members, who became certified in either de-escalation and protective interventions or all areas of TCI, including safety interventions.
Developed by Cornell University, TCI training is a trauma-informed system designed for crisis prevention and management, equipping trainees with strategic frameworks to minimize injury risks, safely handle acute behavior, de-escalate stress, and prevent crises.
TCI includes the following pillars for success: crisis prevention modifies environmental and organizational conditions before stress escalates; de-escalation uses active listening, self-regulation, and behavioral support to calm individuals; safe intervention manages acute physical behavior and applies safe physical restraints only as a last resort to prevent harm; and recovery and repair help children and staff return to an emotional baseline and learn better coping skills.
