This month, the Berlin Elementary 4th grade class concluded their unit of study on the Erie Canal with a field trip to Hudson Crossing Park in Schuylerville, NY, a unique educational park rich in history. The park, centered on Champlain Canal Lock 5 Island, hosts two miles of nature trails, providing access to the Hudson River and Champlain Canal.
The Mountaineers took a guided walk along Hudson Crossing Park’s Eagle Point Trail, exploring the history of the Hudson River and Champlain Canal. They learned about the science of the river, the lock system, and the important role these bodies of water have played in many aspects of our history, as well as why they remain vital today.
The students also tied in their social studies units from earlier in the school year, including slavery, the Iroquois, and the American Revolution. The BES fourth grade team: Mrs. Laz, Mrs. Bersaw, and Mrs. Wolfe, enjoyed seeing the Mountaineers explore the local historical landscape on a beautiful day and be immersed in the landscape that played a part in many of the fourth grade social studies standards covered this school year.
