At the end of May, the fifth-grade classes went to the Bronx Zoo for the annual Bronx Zoo field trip. The Mountaineers and their families enjoyed exploring the zoo, home to over 700 species.
Leading up to this trip, fifth graders formed strong opinions on whether they supported or opposed the existence of zoos. Students researched the positives and negatives of zoos and wrote persuasive pieces stating their opinions with supporting facts. It was a great way for students to experience firsthand some of the ideas they wrote about prior to the visit. Some students maintained their opinions and others shifted their views after the visit.
The fifth-grade Mountaineers and teaching team would like to thank the families and friends of the 5th-graders this year for supporting them through fundraising efforts, as well as our Berlin CSD PTO, which also donated funds to make this memorable experience happen for the 5th graders and their families.
