Berlin Central School District is pleased to announce that School Resource Officer Deputy Alex DaLessio has been selected to receive the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA) Friends of Education Award. This prestigious annual award is presented by CASDA to acknowledge the exceptional and selfless contributions of individuals who are committed to serving students and enriching their respective school communities.

“Deputy DaLessio has certainly met these criteria,” said Tom Olsen, BCSD Director of Pupil and Personal Services, who nominated Deputy DaLessio for the recognition on behalf of the Berlin CSD Administrative Team. “DaLessio has ingrained herself within the school community, and as the Director of PPS, I particularly appreciate the connections she has built with special education students, including those in our STARS classes,” Mr. Olsen continued.

Deputy Alex DaLessio began as School Resource Officer (SRO) of Berlin Central School in January 2024 and has served as a Deputy with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office for over three years.

When asked about what inspired her career choice, Deputy DaLessio stated, “Law enforcement has always been part of my life. My grandfather was a NYS Trooper, and my great-grandfather served as the Chief of Police in Cohoes, so I grew up with a strong appreciation for what this profession represents.” Deputy DaLessio elaborated, “I remember being drawn to it from a young age, and as soon as I was able, I began studying criminal justice. It never really felt like I was searching for a path—it felt like I was following one that had already been set in motion.”

In discussing her transition from general community and road patrol duties within Rensselaer County to the role of an SRO at Berlin CSD, Deputy DaLessio emphasized how important she feels proactive engagement is. As an SRO, she has the capacity to address potential issues preemptively, rather than solely reacting to incidents after they occur.

“Being in a school gives you that chance. You are not just enforcing rules. You are building relationships, earning trust, and recognizing when a student may need support before there is even an issue,” Deputy DaLessio remarked. “That matters.”

Each morning, Deputy DaLessio extends a welcoming presence to the students at the entrances of both Berlin Elementary School and Berlin Middle High School. She fosters meaningful connections through daily greetings, brief checkins, and extended conversations with students who may be seeking guidance or simply a reliable, friendly presence from an individual they trust and know will be consistently available.

SRO DaLessio’s daily presence within the school buildings and throughout the district provides faculty and students with a strong sense of security and support. Her comprehensive knowledge of safety and security protocols, coupled with her dedication to the community she serves, is evident in her work every day. This includes educational programs, ranging from a lesson on “Halloween Safety and Stranger Danger” for elementary students to the engaging “Prom Promise” and online safety presentations offered at the middle and high school levels.

When asked about the defining characteristics of her work environment at Berlin CSD, Deputy DaLessio responded, “What stands out here is the community. It is a rural district with deep roots, and that shows in how connected everyone is. Families have been here for generations. The students are genuine; they’ll be honest with you, and they expect the same in return.”

“When you show up consistently and treat them with respect, you build real trust. That is what makes this assignment worthwhile,” Deputy DaLessio concluded.

Deputy DaLessio is an invaluable member of our school community and a true Friend of Education. She was formally recognized at CASDA’s Annual Awards and Friends of Education Celebration on April 30, 2026.

Congratulations Deputy DaLessio and thank you for your commitment to the BCSD Community!
