Berlin Middle High School’s Science Department hosted the annual Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineering Ambassadors (EAs) visit before the spring break. The RPI EAs presented four different labs that reflected real-world challenges, focusing on Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD): Wind Power, Sea Level Rising, Semiconductors, and Biomimicry & Engineering.
Each year, the RPI ambassadors aim to inspire Mountaineers by engaging them in various hands-on engineering labs related to their fields of study. The presentations were given to students ranging from 6th through 12th grade during their science classes. The RPI EA visit also allows the Mountaineers to ask questions about college life and the goals the EAs have set for themselves as engineering students.
One of the highlights for the students each year is realizing how many different possibilities are available to engineering students, from solving environmental problems to designing buildings, studying wind and sound, and even the creation of medicine and makeup components. It is always an eye-opening visit.
Thank you to the BMHS Science Department’s Mrs. Hayes, Mr. Mellor, Mr. Toole, Mr. Scanell, and Mr. Christian for making this day possible each year, and to the enthusiastic RPI EAs for engaging Mountaineers in such a positive way.
