
This week, the New York State Education Department spotlighted Senior Mountaineers Valentina Popov, Norah Smerdon, Mackenzie Lowell, and Emma Duncan for their BHS Seniors for Seniors Civic Seal Service Learning Project.
It is 2026 Civic Learning Week, and the NYSED website is celebrating the students’ Senior for Senior Project.
Thanks go to Berlin High School Social Studies teacher Mr. Erik Viner for advising the seniors and spearheading the Civic Seal of Readiness program at the Berlin Central School District, with support and partnership from Social Studies Chair Mr. Robert Gould, Berlin Middle High School Principal Mr. David Bernsley, and Superintendent Mr. Ken Rizzo.

Civic Learning Week is a time to recognize the important role education plays in sustaining our democracy. This week, the New York State Education Department is proud to showcase student civic learning that reflects how young people across New York are growing into informed, engaged, and active citizens.
Berlin Central School District in the Eastern portion of the Capital District and had its New York State Seal of Civic Readiness program approved at the start of the 2025-2026 academic school year.
