Middle School Spring Testing Announcement

Please find a copy of the letter emailed home to BMS families of students in grades 6-8 regarding the NYS Spring testing schedule and information below. If you did not receive this email please update your contact information with the main office.

Dear Mountaineer Community,

This spring, Berlin Middle High School will administer the New York State Grades 6–8 assessments in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Grade 8 Science. All exams will be computer-based using student Chromebooks, which students have been using throughout the school year.

Testing Schedule

The ELA, Math, and Science exams include multiple-choice and open-ended questions aligned to grade-level standards. Students are asked to read, write, analyze, and solve problems—skills essential for success in the next grade level.

These assessments provide valuable information about your child’s academic progress. Score reports highlight specific skill areas and compare performance statewide. Please note that state test results may differ from report card grades, which reflect cumulative classroom performance.

We strongly encourage student participation. Broad participation helps us better understand student learning and allows us to target instruction and resources where they are needed most.

To prepare, we encourage students to come to school well-rested, remain relaxed, and simply try their best.

If you wish to opt your child out of NYSED assessments, please review the attached Opt Out Letter for instructions and contact me to confirm your decision. If you have already notified me, please confirm again to ensure accurate exam assignments.
