Congratulations to the newest and current members of the Taconic Valley Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society, who were celebrated and inducted into the chapter at the Berlin Middle High School on November 5th.
There were 23 current and new members in NHS and 26 new NJHS members in this year’s honor societies.
The objective of the Taconic Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote working leadership, to stimulate a desire to offer service, and to encourage the development of character in students of the Berlin Central School District.
The evening’s ceremony began with a Flag Salute led by newly inducted NJHS eighth-grade Mountaineers Trent Hastings and Nicholas Meyers.
The five pillars of the National Honor Society – Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship, and Character – were represented by candles and introduced and lit by NHS members: Scholarship – Charlie Young, Character – Norah Smerdon, Leadership – Anthony deLaurentis, and Service – Lillian Von Schilgen.
Berlin’s NJHS & NHS Advisor Ms. Karen Day, Berlin Middle High School Principal Mr. David Bernsley, and BCSD Superintendent Mr. Ken Rizzo helped celebrate the students’ accomplishments during the event and inducted the newest NJHS and NHS members.
Thank you to the friends and family members who helped celebrate the Mountaineer scholars, artists, athletes, actors, musicians, writers, scientists, mathematicians, and so much more as a community.
Ms. Day was excited to move this year’s ceremony to the fall so that this year’s members can bring their scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character to the community through projects, events, and programs throughout the school year.
Please join them for their first community event, Wreaths Across America, at the Berlin Center Cemetery on December 13, 2025, at 12 pm.
