New York State Senator Mr. Jake Ashby and Berlin CSD Superintendent Mr. Ken Rizzo

On October 8, 2025, New York State Senator Mr. Jake Ashby was welcomed at Berlin Middle High School with a rush from the end of a school day’s dismissal; his timing led to some waves and greetings, creating a buzz among the student body who recognized him from his past visits. This type of presence creates curiosity but also makes students feel seen and engaged with their government representatives, particularly in rural districts that can be overlooked.

Advocacy for one’s community and partnerships with local representatives are critical to the success of a public school during times of fiscal struggle and trying to meet the needs of students and the greater school community. This was the topic at hand during a sit-down conversation between Senator Jake Ashby, who represents the residents of the Berlin Central School District, Berlin CSD Superintendent Mr. Ken Rizzo, and BCSD School Business Official Ms. Colleen Mills.

Senator Ashby’s visit to Berlin CSD came about after Superintendent Rizzo reached out to request an opportunity to meet, aiming to create a strong partnership and strengthen outcomes for students.

Some of the most pressing issues faced by the district and state governments were discussed during the hour-long meeting. This included the rising costs of operating a school district, State Aid, bipartisanship, and transportation for accessibility to resources and programs.

Senator Ashby highlighted the significance of consulting with all constituents, given the unique needs of the large and diverse area he represents, comprising small cities, towns, and rural districts, like Berlin CSD’s community.

Senator Ashby and Mr. Rizzo both emphasized the importance of prioritizing students’ needs and access to education as they are the future and whom we need to invest in to make our community strong and sustainable.

Mr. Rizzo was grateful for Senator Ashby’s familiarity with some of the district’s unique needs and the strong pride Mountaineers have in their school and community.

Senator Ashby and Superintendent Rizzo look forward to continuing the dialogue and partnership for the school district, its students, and community, ensuring that student needs in rural districts receive equal advocacy as those in larger districts.

Berlin CSD is on Senator Ashby’s agenda again soon, and appreciates his time and sincerity.

Go Mountaineers!
