Last weekend, the Berlin Central School District’s elementary Odyssey of the Mind team competed at the 2025 regional tournament in Coxsackie-Athens—and they took home first place in their division!
Competing in Problem 3: “Cooking with Books,” the team showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills by designing and building their own set, writing an original script, and crafting costumes—all without adult assistance. They drew inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s celebrated book, The Hobbit, centering their entire performance around its themes and narrative from the piece about Smaug’s cave, which added an imaginative twist to their presentation. Their hard work and innovation have earned them a spot in the New York State Finals in Syracuse on April 5th!
The Mountaineers not only received first place but also were the recipients of the OMER’s Award. The award is named for the Odyssey of the Mind raccoon mascot, OMER, in recognition of individuals or teams who demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior, or exceptional talent.
Odyssey of the Mind encourages young minds to think outside the box, develop unique solutions, and bring their ideas to life through an eight-minute performance filled with imaginative props and scenery.
Berlin Elementary Principal Mrs. Cataldo has been so impressed by the hard work the Mountaineers have put in over the last few months. During the March assembly, Principal Cataldo used the team as an example of March’s character trait of perseverance.
“The Odyssey of the Mind Team has spent countless hours afterschool and on weekends preparing for this competition,” said Mrs. Cataldo.
“They are excellent examples of Mountaineers who demonstrate perseverance; they kept focused on their goals, never giving up, even when things got difficult.”
The school community is incredibly proud of our OoTM Mountaineer team and can’t wait to see them shine at States!
Way to go Mountaineers: Adel Derstine, Francis Maxfield, Jesse Cummings, Alaina Chittenden, Clara Church, Caraline Webster, and Rosalee Riccardi!
