Congratulations to Berlin High School sophomore Julia Schoeffel! Julia’s drawing “Sonder” won an Honorable Mention Award for the 2025 Scholastic Art Awards in the Drawing & Illustration Category for the Region-at-Large East Division!

The meaning behind Julia’s graphite drawing is as follows:
“Use and abuse of the human body holds both beauty and a site of struggle. In my piece I portrayed the way personal experiences shape our physical selves. This opens interpretation to the layers of meaning and history the subject had endured. This enables viewers to uncover and reflect on their own life experiences and connect to the piece on a personal level. I did this through drawing an anguished, malnourished male with many diverse scars, cuts, and bruises. The materials I used were graphite pencils and paper.”
The nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens, the Scholastic Art Awards have been around since 1923. This is the first time Berlin HS has entered students into this national competition, and we plan on doing so now annually!
