Today is the 15th annual World Read Aloud Day, a day dedicated not just to reading, but to the art and practice of reading aloud. This celebration is also a time to reflect on the importance of literacy and sharing stories.
Mrs. Peter-Hoen and Mrs. Heinrichs, Berlin Elementary teachers, love this day. They emphasize the importance of literacy daily in their classrooms and celebrate it on the first Wednesday of February each year.
Today, Mrs. Peter-Hoen’s third-grade class and Mrs. Heinrichs/Ms. Ballard’s first-grade class invited guest readers into their classrooms. Mrs. Heinrichs surprised the third-graders first thing this morning as a mystery guest reader, followed by BES Principal Cataldo.
Mrs. Heinrichs/Ms. Ballard’s first-grade Mountaineers had a special visit from BCSD’s MTSS Coordinator, Mrs. Samantha Higgins, who loves to read aloud and was honored to be invited to share a story today.
Mrs. Lavoo’s Pre-K classroom also celebrated the day with a special guest, Mr. Burns, Early Learning Principal, Questar III BOCES. Mr. Burns, who is also a published author, shared his love of storytelling and reading with the youngest Mountaineers by reading his own book, Nervous Rex, a story about a young dinosaur who often gets nervous and worries, but soon learns strategies that help him overcome his anxiety.
World Read Aloud Day helps shine a light on the joy of storytelling while promoting literacy.
So, take time today to celebrate World Read Aloud Day with a favorite book and make someone’s day by sharing a story.
