In October, Mrs. Cataldo, Berlin Elementary Principal, hosted the school year’s second monthly Character Education assembly for kindergarten through 5th-grade students. The theme, chosen by the BES Character Education committee, was Safety and Responsibility, with a focus on online responsibility and safety. Students learned that being responsible online means being respectful and safe, and being safe online means understanding and avoiding risks. The Mountaineers played a trivia game during the assembly to reinforce these concepts with the following questions.

Thank you, first-grade teacher Mr. Dobbins, for demonstrating to the Mountaineers why we shouldn’t immediately believe everything we see online. Mr. Dobbins, a cheesecake lover, saw a video claiming dipping Oreos in sour cream tastes like cheesecake. During the assembly, Mr. Dobbins tested this food experiment and found it to be untrue.

A BES Mountaineer is responsible, safe and respectful. Merits are given out by BES staff and bus drivers to celebrate Mountaineers who demonstrate these traits. The recipients receive merits that are deposited in the Mountaineer Merit container in BES’s main hallway.

Principal Mrs. Cataldo was so proud of the Berlin Elementary Mountaineers for the amount of merits they earned for being RESPONSIBLE, SAFE and RESPECTFUL!

October Mountaineer Merit Winners

Each month, Principal Cataldo draws the names of ten merit recipients (five from kindergarten to second grade and five from third to fifth grade), who receive a prize and recognition at the assemblies. Please find October’s Merit winners below.
