Berlin Elementary fifth graders have been working diligently over the last few weeks researching, collaborating, and preparing for a debate in ELA. Students were posed with this question, “Should Zoos Exist?”.

The fifth graders gathered relevant evidence and information to help them determine their stance on this argument. Students conducted their research, wrote an argumentative essay, and had the opportunity to see their studies come to life at the Bronx Zoo.

Preparation for this debate encouraged them to collaborate with their peers as a team, consider multiple perspectives on a controversial issue, and practice both public speaking and argumentative skills in a respectful manner.

The students held their debates this week and did an excellent job.
