During this school year’s last Character Education Assembly at Berlin Elementary School, Principal Tracy Kent and the Character Education Committee brought all the BES Mountaineers together for the first time this year in one large assembly.  The focus for the assembly was on showing gratitude for “what makes the school community a better place.”

Special guests from the BCSD Transportation Department, BES Main Offices, Nurses’ Office, Technology Department, Buildings and Grounds, Food Service and BES Custodial Staff were invited to come to the assembly and receive handmade cards signed by all the BES Mountaineers.

The cards and the assembly were an opportunity for the BES Mountaineer Community to show its gratitude for the staff members, who are essential to the Community at BES.

The Character Education Committee also invited a Mystery Guest!

Ms. Laura Houle from the BES Custodial Staff was this guest, and second grade students, who had prepared questions, got to know a little more about Ms. Houle, aka Ms. Laura.

“The favorite part of my job is making a safe place for the students each day,” was one of Ms. Laura’s responses.

Thanks went out to the staff members who took time to come and receive the gratitude of the young Mountaineers. A short video was played during the assembly to say thank you as well:

Near the end of the assembly Principal Kent announced that to conclude the Community focused character education this year a BES Community Picnic will be taking place on June 3, rain or shine from 5 – 6:30 pm. The BES Mountaineers and their families are invited to bring their own picnic dinner and enjoy live music by the Mother Goose Jazz Band on the front lawn of BES. Light snacks and water will be provided.

This year’s final BES assembly concluded with Principal Kent announcing the monthly Mountaineer Merit awards and teacher-nominated Classroom Community Member awards.

Mrs. Kent reminded everyone that BES Mountaineers will be receiving surprise merit announcements throughout the month of June. She called on the students to keep up their responsible, safe and respectful behaviors and to continue adding to the Mountaineer Merit bucket in the main hallway.

Classroom Community Members are students nominated for showing good citizenship and being responsible, safe and respectful.

At the monthly assembly through the school year, Principal Kent draws ten merit recipients (five from kindergarten to second grade and five from third to fifth grade), who receive a prize.

May’s recipients: Gage Burdick, Rosalee Riccardi, Willamina Woodcock, Gavin Church, Zaiden Gardner, Kameryn Hathaway, Christopher LaMountain, Janiyah McBride and Samantha Miner.
