Dear Berlin Families,

On Thursday afternoon, it was brought to our attention that a serious threat was made on the image messaging app, Snapchat by one of our students at Berlin MS/HS. In response, we immediately contacted law enforcement to investigate the threat. At least two students were involved in disseminating the threat.

The situation continues to be investigated by school authorities and law enforcement. Threats against schools are treated very seriously, and students who are determined to have made such threats face consequences through our school’s Code of Conduct, as well as potential legal consequences.

We applaud the student who came forward to report the situation. This is an opportune time to discuss this situation with your children and emphasize that there are severe consequences of such actions, even if the threat is made in jest. Please remind your children about the importance of reporting any suspicious or potentially threatening activity to an adult as soon as possible.

Please know that the safety of our students and staff is one of our primary concerns and any threats of violence, even if deemed not credible, are taken very seriously. As a precautionary measure and to reassure students and staff, there was a police presence at school Thursday and Friday as part of our standard response procedures.

We are grateful for the cooperation and assistance of the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, our staff, and our students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the district office at 518-658-2690.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Young
