Health and Safety Information

Stay home if you are sick

Attendance at school is extremely important and necessary for student success however, it is that time of year where we have been seeing cases of RSV, Flu and COVID.

Please keep your child home if experiencing any of the following:

  • A  temperature of 100 degrees or higher-  A temperature must be resolved 24 hours without fever reducing medication before returning to school.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea- These symptoms must be resolved 24 hours without medication before returning to school.
  • An uncontrolled cough or green discharge coming from the nose.
  • An unexplained rash that is itchy, appears to be spreading, and or it has appeared on other family members or friends.

Also as a reminder the health offices at both BES and BMHS have COVID test kits available, that upon request can be sent home with your child or picked up from the main office of your child’s school.

If you have questions please feel free to contact Michele Corsey, mcorsey@berlincentral.org RN-School Nurse at the Middle High School or Jean Hammond, jhammond@berlincentral.org RN-School Nurse at the Elementary School

Regular check-ups with a family doctor and following a vaccination schedule are essential for promoting good health in children. You can also adopt these simple practices:

  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Wash hands often with soap and warm water
  • Cough/sneeze into elbow
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get a good night’s sleep every day

Emergency Cards
Emergency cards are kept in the Health Office and used to contact parents or other individuals in the event of student illness or injury. Please notify the Health Office whenever there are changes to your emergency contact information. Additional cards are available from the Health Office or under the forms link on the right-hand column of this page.

Medications
In accordance with NY State Law, the Health Office must require a signed written order from each student’s private physician to dispense any over the counter or prescription medications. Students must also have written consent from a parent or guardian. Forms for written consent are available from the Health Office or under the forms link on the right-hand column of this page.

Sports Forms

All students must have an up to date physical examination on file in the health office prior to starting practice for each sport season. Physicals are valid for 1 year from the date of examination and to the end of the current sports season. Health examinations from Private Physicians are accepted but must be on the 2020 NYSED approved health examination form. The school physician will provide physicals to those students who do not have the required documentation on file.
