The internet impacts almost every aspect of daily life, and it can be hard to escape it.  Therefore Deputy Russo from the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department spoke to students at Berlin Middle/High School about the importance of internet safety.

Students in 8th and 9th grade listened to Deputy Russo give tips and guidelines about how to be safe on the internet.  One important tip he gave to students was to be mindful of the impressions they make online.  He encouraged students to ask themselves, “Would I do or say this in front of my parents?”  And if the answer was “no,” then they should not post it to the internet.  The point he was making was that internet content often reaches far beyond the original intended audience, and much content is archived or cataloged (meaning it never goes away).

In addition to the consideration of the impressions they make online, Deputy Russo educated students on phishing scams and internet imposters.
